               What Sizes Are Precuts?

  • Fat Quarter:

    A fat quarter measures about 18 by 22 inches, usually including the selvage. It's a quarter yard of fabric cut wider and shorter than a standard cut, which makes it easier to get larger blocks, quilt squares, or strips without an awkward, skinny piece.

  • Layer Cakes and Jelly Rolls:

    A layer cake is a stack of 10-inch squares. The bigger size is good for large format patchwork, sawtooth stars, or a bold quilt top with a more intricate design. A jelly roll is a roll of 2.5-inch-wide precut strips cut across the width of the fabric, which usually runs 42 to 44 inches.

  • Charm Packs and Jelly Rolls:

    A charm pack is a stack of 5-inch cotton fabric squares, and a mini charm pack offers the same idea in 2.5-inch squares. The smaller sizes are a favorite for traditional patchwork, half-square triangles, and snowball blocks.
