What sizes are "precuts" ?

  • Fat Quarter

    Fat quarters measure at 18" x 22", usually including the selvage.

  • Layer Cakes

    Layer cakes are 10" x 10" squares of fabric.

  • Charm Packs

    Charm packs are 5" x 5" squares of fabric.

  • Jelly Roll

    A jelly roll is 2.5" wide strip x the width of fabric (usually 42" - 44")

What is the difference between a quarter yard and a fat quarter?

A “quarter yard” of fabric normally means cutting 9″ tall across the full width of fabric (about 42″), giving you a long, skinny strip.

A fat quarter is also a quarter yard of fabric, but instead of being cut in one long strip, the half-yard of fabric is first cut lengthwise in half, and then crosswise in half again. That makes a piece about 18″ × 21″—shorter and wider, or “fatter.”

Quilters prefer fat quarters because the chunkier cut is much more versatile: you can get larger blocks, squares, or strips out of it without awkwardly long skinny pieces.
