Quilt Jacket 101: What It Is, How It’s Made, and 3 Ways to Get One

Every time we post a quilt jacket, someone asks the same question in the comments: “Wait, is that made from an actual quilt?”

Yes. Every single time. So let’s answer it properly.

What Is a Quilt Jacket?

A quilt jacket is a wearable jacket made from quilted fabric or an existing quilt. At Clover Cottons, our quilt jackets start with one-of-a-kind vintage quilts, preserving the original patchwork, quilting, and character while giving the textile an entirely new life as something you can wear.

Not That Kind of Quilted Jacket

When most people hear “quilted jacket,” they picture something like a Barbour — layers of fabric with quilting stitched through them, made new from fabric off the bolt.

That’s a perfectly nice jacket. It is not what we make.

A Clover Cottons quilt jacket starts as an actual vintage quilt — often hand-pieced and hand-quilted decades ago, in patterns like Grandmother’s Flower Garden, Dresden Plate, or Shoo Fly.

We find vintage quilts we love for their handwork, color, pattern, and character and give them a second life as something that can be worn instead of tucked away.

How Does a Vintage Quilt Become a Jacket?

Every jacket begins with a real, one-of-a-kind vintage quilt, which means every finished piece is one-of-a-kind too.

The jacket pieces are thoughtfully cut from the original quilt to make the most of its existing patchwork and design. The pieces are then sewn into the jacket and finished with coordinating binding around the edges.

We don’t add stiff interfacing, allowing the finished jacket to keep the softness and lived-in character of the textile it came from.

Because we’re working with an existing quilt rather than fabric off a bolt, every decision is influenced by that particular textile — its size, pattern placement, condition, colors, and history. That’s part of what makes each jacket completely its own.

Three Ways to Get a Clover Cottons Quilt Jacket

We’ve built our Quilt Jackets collection around three different paths, depending on whether you want us to make your jacket, you want to sew it yourself, or you already have a meaningful quilt you’d like to wear.

1. Choose a Vintage Quilt and Have Us Make Your Jacket

Start by choosing the one-of-a-kind vintage quilt you love. You’ll select your size and share your preferences with us, and we’ll turn that quilt into a jacket made just for you.

Because there is only one of each vintage quilt, once someone claims it — either as a made-to-order jacket or a kit — that quilt is gone.

2. Make Your Own With a Quilt Jacket Kit

If you know your way around a sewing machine and want to make the jacket yourself, choose one of our Quilt Jacket Kits.

Each kit includes:

  • One hand-selected vintage quilt
  • Coordinating pre-made binding
  • A printed quilt jacket pattern from LaRae Handmade

The pattern includes multiple sizes and length options, so you can transform the vintage quilt yourself and make the finished jacket your own.

3. Turn Your Own Quilt Into Something You Can Wear

Already have a quilt that means something to you?

With Heirloom to Wear, you can send us your own quilt and we’ll transform it into a custom jacket made for you.

It might be a quilt made by your grandmother, one that has been in your family for years, or simply a quilt you love but would rather wear than keep folded away.

The original quilt stays at the heart of the finished piece — it just gets a completely new way to be loved.

Are Quilt Jackets Beginner-Friendly to Make?

If you’re comfortable using a sewing machine, making your own quilt jacket can be much more approachable than you might expect.

You’re starting with an already quilted textile, and the LaRae Handmade pattern included in our kits provides the instructions for turning that quilt into a wearable jacket.

You don’t need previous garment-making experience to be excited about giving it a try. Our goal with the kits is to give you the core materials and a clear path to turning a quilt you love into something completely different.

One of a Kind, on Purpose

The thing we love most about vintage quilt jackets is also the thing that makes them impossible to mass-produce.

Every quilt already has a story before it ever reaches us. Its fabrics were chosen, its pieces were sewn together, and someone spent time quilting it long before we found it.

We get to add another chapter.

And because we’ll never find that exact quilt again, we’ll never make that exact jacket again either.

If a vintage quilt in our Quilt Jackets collection feels like yours, it really is one of one.
