What Is a Fat Quarter? Sizes, Uses, and How Many You Need

"Fat quarter" is one of those terms that gets thrown around constantly in quilting and never explained, so if you've been quietly wondering what it actually means, here you go.

What is a fat quarter?

A standard quarter-yard of fabric cut the regular way is a long, skinny strip — about 9" x 42". A fat quarter is the same quarter-yard of fabric, but cut differently: instead of one long strip, a half-yard is cut in half again the other direction, giving you a roughly 18" x 22" rectangle. Same amount of fabric, much more useful shape.

That shape is the whole point. An 18" x 22" piece lets you cut larger squares and shapes than a 9"-wide strip ever could, which is exactly why quilters reach for fat quarters over regular quarter-yards for most patchwork.

Fat quarter vs. charm pack vs. layer cake

These three show up together constantly, so here's the quick version:

  • Fat quarters — about 18" x 22" each, the most flexible size for bigger blocks and mixed-scale projects.
  • Charm packs — precut 5" x 5" squares, ready to sew with zero cutting, best for small patchwork and scrappy projects.
  • Layer cakes — precut 10" x 10" squares, a middle ground that's great for bigger, bolder blocks without cutting a full yard.

All three are ways of buying coordinated fabric without cutting it yourself — they just differ in size and how much flexibility you have to cut them down further.

How many fat quarters you need

It depends on the quilt, but as a rough guide: a lap-size throw typically uses 8–12 fat quarters, a twin-size quilt around 16–20, and a queen-size quilt 24–30 or more, depending on how much of the design uses background fabric versus print. Most of our quilt kits are built around a set number of fat quarters or precuts, so the math is already done for you — no guessing required.

Best fat quarter bundles for beginners

If you're picking your first bundle, look for a curated set in one coordinated palette rather than buying quarters one at a time — it takes the guesswork out of whether prints will work together. Our fat quarter bundles are pre-paired by color story, so every piece in the stack is designed to sit next to every other piece.

The short version

A fat quarter is an 18" x 22" cut of fabric — the same amount as a regular quarter-yard, just shaped to be more useful for quilting. If you're new to precuts, a fat quarter bundle is one of the easiest ways to start a project without buying and cutting yardage yourself.
