Beginner FAQs

Does everything I need to make a quilt come in a Clover Cottons Quilt Kit?

Most quilt kits include the fabric needed to create the quilt top, and ours are designed to go a step further. Clover Cottons quilt kits include all the fabric for the quilt top, plus premade binding, a printed pattern, and a kit mockup for easy reference, all packaged in a reusable vinyl zip bag.

The only additional materials you’ll need are backing fabric and batting. The required size will vary depending on the quilt pattern and finished quilt size you choose.

Can I make a quilt with no experience?

Yes, you can absolutely make a quilt with no experience. Many beginner quilt patterns are designed with simple shapes, step by step instructions, and straightforward construction to help you learn as you go.

Starting with an easy quilt pattern or a beginner quilt kit makes the process even more approachable, since your fabrics are already coordinated and the steps are clearly laid out. Quilting is a skill you build over time, and your first quilt is meant to be a learning experience.

It doesn’t need to be perfect to be something you’re proud of.

What do I need besides the kit?

Beyond your quilt kit, you’ll just need a few additional materials to finish your quilt. This includes backing fabric and batting, which go on the back and inside of your quilt. The size you need will depend on the finished size of the pattern you choose.

You’ll also need basic sewing tools like a sewing machine, thread, pins or clips, and a way to cut your fabric accurately, such as a rotary cutter, cutting mat, and quilting ruler.

Once you have those, you’re ready to start quilting.

Can I make a quilt with a regular sewing machine?

Yes, you can absolutely make a quilt on a regular sewing machine. You don’t need a longarm or any specialty equipment to get started.

Most beginner quilts are designed to be sewn, assembled, and quilted using a standard home sewing machine. As long as your machine can sew a straight stitch, you’re good to go.

For your first quilt, many beginners choose simple quilting methods like straight line quilting, which are easy to manage on a home machine and still look beautiful.
